Some samples from my just completed 30-day challenge. Drawing or painting, when it's easy, puts me in a calm, meditative state. I may not be creating brilliant masterpieces during this challenge, and I did half-ass a few 5-minute sketches late at night, but at least I am enjoying the gentle practice of observation and focus. Here's some proof that I haven't slacked off yet.
I also remembered why I never use watercolor pencils. They fail. Worse than colored pencils. Worse than actual watercolors. Why would anyone use something so useless? Actually, it's infinitely more likely that the fault is entirely my own. I am sure I never learned to use them properly. Also, my paper wasn't appropriate for water, rippling up in unattractive waves. I won't even post the picture of the stupid frog I made. The people have spoken. Drawing or painting every day for 30 days won the vote, while finding new music came in second. And whoever wrote in that I should "eat a new animal every day" is a cheeky bastard. As I continue the walking challenge until later this month, it will be interesting to see if I can do two challenges at once without losing steam. To get started, I cracked open my dusty chest of art supplies, most of which I haven't used since college. Oh, chalk pastels and watercolor pencils, I've neglected you so. At least my paints are already out on the dining room table as I've been making a few paintings more recently. I began this challenge yesterday by finally finishing a portrait of a white cockatoo for an out-of-town friend who graciously played host this past March. I also just bought a few good pens online — hope they'll arrive soon from the Amazon fairy. |
